Neil Left School
With a keen ambition to work in Construction.
A few details…
Clay Lane Construction Ltd was founded in 2006 by owner and director Neil Machin, following more than 35 years of hands-on experience in the construction industry.
Neil left school in 1985 to begin his career with A Bromley Excavations Ltd, where he had the privilege of working directly under Arthur Bromley himself, alongside respected industry professionals Andrew Stevenson and Glenn Cocker. Working within this experienced and knowledgeable team gave Neil a strong grounding in quality workmanship, site discipline, and professional standards that would shape his entire career.
During this time, Neil worked across a wide range of projects for numerous Councils, such as Chesterfield, Rotherham, Hull, Barnsley and Doncaster Council. As well as private residential developments throughout Doncaster and surrounding areas including Wakefield, Sheffield, Barnsley, Nottingham, Derby and Lincoln. These projects included the construction of houses and bungalows, helping to support the growth of local communities.
Neil’s experience continued to expand through involvement in significant projects such as accommodation for the World Student Games in Sheffield, works at the Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Ministry of Defence projects, and the Land Registry Office for Nottingham Council. These high-profile schemes strengthened his technical knowledge and provided valuable large-scale project experience.
Following this, Weaver Homes was established, where Neil worked under the ownership of Irvine Weaver on the company’s first housebuilding site in Sprotbrough, Doncaster. The development was a success and the company later evolved into Strata Homes, further enhancing Neil’s expertise within residential construction.
In 2006, with more than two decades of industry experience, Neil established Clay Lane Construction Ltd. The business initially focused on small domestic projects around Doncaster, quickly earning a reputation for reliability, quality workmanship and professionalism.
As the company grew, Clay Lane Construction secured subcontract work with respected housebuilders including McInerney Homes in Thornton, Bradford.
A key milestone came in 2009 when the company secured its first site for national housebuilder Persimmon Homes — the St Aidan’s site in Doncaster. The project proved a major success and marked the beginning of sustained growth.
From this point onward, the business expanded steadily, forming partnerships with some of the country’s largest national housebuilders and construction PLCs. Clay Lane Construction developed a strong reputation for delivering high-quality groundwork and brickwork packages on major residential developments.
In 2022, the group expanded further with the formation of Clay Lane Brickwork Ltd, strengthening its specialist brickwork operations and supporting continued growth.
Today, Clay Lane Construction stands as a well-established and respected contractor within the residential construction sector.
